Artificial Intelligence and Indian School Education: Opportunities, Risks and the Need for Democratic Governance

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) affects many areas of life, including education. Around the world, schools and colleges have started to use AI in different ways. In India, the use of AI in school education is still at an early stage, but the government and policymakers are showing strong interest in its future role. In education, AI can help in several ways like personalising learning materials, suggesting lesson plans, identifying learning gap, analysing student performance, etc. However, AI systems are not neutral or perfect. They learn from existing data. With biased data, the AI system may repeat or even increase that. Therefore the use of AI in Indian education requires careful thinking. This paper explains AI, the present condition of Indian school education, the possible benefits of AI, and the risks involved. It argues that AI should be used in a democratic and responsible way. AI systems should be transparent, and their working methods should be open to review. Teachers should be supported, not replaced. Without ethical rules, AI may increase inequality. But if used carefully and responsibly, AI can create learner-centered education.
