Abstract
The advent of social media has revolutionized the way we communicate, interact, and learn languages. This paper explores the influence of social media on second language acquisition (SLA), highlighting its potential benefits and challenges. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, offer unprecedented opportunities for language learners to engage with authentic content, interact with native speakers, and develop their language skills in a real-world context. Research suggests that social media can facilitate SLA by providing learners with access to vast amounts of comprehensible input, opportunities for output, and feedback from native speakers (Krashen, 1985; Swain, 1995). Social media also enables learners to develop their pragmatic competence, cultural awareness, and digital literacy skills (Belz, 2003; Thorne, 2008). Moreover, social media can foster a sense of community and motivation among language learners, promoting sustained engagement and learning. However, the use of social media in SLA also raises concerns about the quality of input, the role of the teacher, and the potential for distractions and miscommunication. This paper argues that social media should be seen as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, traditional language instruction. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of social media for SLA theory, research, and practice, highlighting the need for further investigation into the effective integration of social media into language learning contexts.
