Abstract

This research analyses the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz through the lens of the Fragmented Bildungsroman, examining its narrative structure, character development, and themes. The series differentiates itself from conventional young adult fiction by featuring episodic storytelling, non-linear character arcs, and interconnected subplots. The term ‘bildungsroman’ refers to a narrative form that traces a protagonist’s moral and psychological development from childhood to adulthood. Through an in-depth analysis of the series’ narrative techniques, character trajectories, and thematic explorations, this study elucidates Alex Rider’s Bildungsroman journey within the context of espionage. By juxtaposing the conventional Bildungsroman norms against fragmented approach, this research offers scholarly insights into the evolving landscape of young adult literature. This paper commences with an exploration of the background of the Alex Rider series, contextualising its significance within the realm of young adult fiction. It then delves into the concept of Fragmented Bildungsroman, examining its characteristics and literary importance. Themes such as identity, morality, and resilience challenge traditional Bildungsroman norms.
